Apprenticeships

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to learn from industry experts whilst earning a wage. You will have a dedicated Skills Tutor to support you all the way to the completion of your course. And that’s not all - as an apprentice you will gain access to amazing discounts to be used at hundreds of high street and online brands, helping your hard earned cash stretch a little further!

How many hours will I work?

Your working hours will vary depending on the hours available at your chosen nursery; however, the average working hours will be between 30 and 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday.

How much will I earn?

At Bright Horizons we are committed to paying above the apprenticeship wage, with a starting rate of £5 an hour, which will be reviewed after 3 months. For the most up to date rate please visit: https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates

I don’t have my GCSE grade C or above. Will this be an issue?

Not at all! Part of your Apprenticeship will include Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills in both Maths and English.

How long will the apprenticeship last and what qualification will I get at the end?

If you have no prior childcare experience you will start on an Early Years Practitioner Level 2 standard and this will take approximately 15 months including the End Point Assessment.

If you have a prior entry level childcare qualification you may start on the Early Years Educator Advanced Level 3 standard which will take approximately 24 months including the End Point Assessment.

What is an End Point Assessment (EPA)?

End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment for an apprenticeship to ensure that you have met the relevant standards and criteria. Your Skills Coach along with your Nursery Manager will fully prepare you for this and provide you with a mock assessment to complete in advance. This is nothing to be worried about - it is purely a way of looking at the knowledge, skills and behaviours that you have learned whilst completing your apprenticeship.

What if I am currently signed up with another training provider?

Where possible, we strongly encourage apprentice momentum and continuation. If you are with another training provider currently, we will consider you continuing your training with them: however you will need to inform us as soon as possible so we can contact them and make the necessary adjustments.

How is the apprenticeship training delivered?

All apprenticeship training will take place within the childcare setting where you are employed. You will be allocated a Skills Tutor who you will be in regular contact with you, either face to face or remotely. They will be on hand to give you support, advice and guidance to enable you to meet the required standard. You'll be set specific targets each month to complete. These can include:

  • Observing you carrying out day to day activities in your nursery
  • Providing written accounts of your activities
  • Professional discussions about research you’ve carried out
  • Producing evidence of work you have completed in the nursery
  • Your Skills Tutor obtaining witness testimonies from your senior team members about your activities, conduct and progress in the nursery setting

Will I need to travel to other venues?

All training will be carried out in your nursery setting. However you may also need to attend occasional additional training in external venues but you will be given prior notice if this is needed.
