When we are looking for a new job, there are many factors to consider which help us to decide whether it’s the right job for us. Looking beyond the job description and pay cheque, it’s important we also consider what benefits and training a company offers, are there flexible hours and career growth opportunities? What are the company’s values and culture and last but not least what’s the team like? Are they a friendly bunch who will support you on your way and make you feel part of the team?
It’s important that you do your research before you make your decision. It will help to check the company’s website, social media and third party reviews to get the full picture. Don’t be afraid to ask questions during the interview process but ultimately go with what it feels right to you.
Sally and Shannon from Long Road nursery in Cambridge shared their career journey stories with us and why being part of their team is so important to them.
Shannon, describes her Bright Horizons journey and how she became Deputy Manager.
“I began my career at Long Road Day as a newly qualified Nursery Nurse in the toddler room and it was my first role in the childcare industry. This role allowed me to develop my understanding and knowledge of how children learn and develop and what we can do as childcare practitioners to allow them to reach their full potential.
I was then able to use my learnt knowledge and skills to become a Deputy Room Leader and I had an opportunity to take part in the ‘Bright Horizons Room Leader Development Programme’, which supported me to become an aspiring Room Leader. After that training, I was promoted to a Room Leader role in the toddler room.
In order to progress and broaden my experience and knowledge of a variety age ranges I was supported by the nursery manager to transition to a baby room and worked effectively with the team there.
In January 2019, I was offered a fantastic opportunity to become Deputy Manager and I have been able to develop and extend my knowledge and understanding of the operations at Bright Horizons while supporting all my team to have the same opportunities to develop as I have been given. I am now able to share my experience and knowledge to help others to succeed.”
Sally, a Third in Charge and Pre-school Room Leader, shares with us why she transitioned to join the team at Long Road and never looked back.
"I have been in childcare for 27 years and started as a childminder. I transitioned to Hinxton nursery, where I started as a nursery nurse and achieved my diploma in Pre-school Practice before taking on the role of a Room Leader, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I was promoted to Third in Charge and supported the nursery with the operational side of the business which helped me to extend my knowledge of how the company operated.
In 2019, I moved to Long Road nursery. Originally it was only for 6 months to support their preschool room as a Room Leader. In the end, I decided that I would like to stay there permanently. My decision was made so much easier based on the staff being so welcoming and making me feel part of their team. I have made some very good friends and partnerships with my work colleagues throughout my time here at Long Road.
We are a very dedicated team here at Long Road and pride ourselves on providing the best care and education to our children and their families. We are passionate about children's development and want to nurture their love of learning to ensure each child reaches their full potential.
As a team, we do numerous team activities such as the Awards of Excellence where we are able to support each other’s achievements, team meetings and at Christmas, we are able to engage in light entertainment where I introduced the team into the world of quizzes, bingo and games nights to work together and win prizes.”
